Magnum
Ballet of the Croatian National Theatre in Split (HR)
choreographer & director: Rami Be’er
Rami Be’er was born to a family of musicians in the Ga’aton Kibbutz, Israel. He began playing the cello as a child, but later transferred to study dance with Yehudith Arnon. He joined the Company in 1980 as dancer and choreographer and since then has created numerous works for mostly adult audiences, as well as several quite popular works for children. Some of his works have received international awards, while Be’er himself is a recipient of several Israeli as well as international works. Different companies around the world have commissioned him to create works for them. In addition to choreography he frequently also designs the lights and set for his own works.
The works of Rami Be’er are free of any explicit message, he does not attempt to tell as any particular story, rather he provokes the audience to connect with their inner world. For him, as a director and choreographer, movement is only one component within a broader creative bundle of visual elements as is set design, the lights or costumes. All his works offer multimedia type of effects, a sequence of optical illusions, which together with the music as (according to Be’er himself) a “source of the dance” will emotionally flood the senses of the observer.
Comprised of elements from his earlier works, the performance MAGNUM, directed and choreographed by Rami Be’er this time is also a totally new creation, developed specifically for the Ensemble of the Croatian National Ballet in Split.
This is what Rami Be’er has to say about the creation itself: “I do not tell a story, rather I am offering an invitation to a journey. The public enters the theatre, takes a seat, the lights come down, and I am offering him/her a choice. The audience member has the freedom to connect with the performance through his/her own associations, feelings, thoughts, memories. I experience both dance and music as a form of communication between peoples of the world, regardless of their nationalities, languages or religions. We can in fact develop a bridge of understanding throughout the world.”
